Solomon and the Divided Kingdom

Writer: Neil RogersNeil Rogers

Now Solomon was David’s son

Of all the boys he was the one

To wear the crown and rule the land

To build the temple David planned

One night the Lord appeared and said

To Solomon asleep in bed

What do you need, ask what you will

He asked for wisdom to fulfil

The duties of a godly king

God made him wise in everything

And gave him all the other stuff

He did not need, more than enough

The clever king became a star

Admirers came from near and far

Now Solomon grew very rich

And built God’s temple next to which

His palace, roughly twice the size

Declared what he’d prioritize

God’s house was filled with all things gold

His palace with temptations old

The heart of Solomon was turned

Away from God whose anger burned

On every high and lofty place

This wise king’s folly and disgrace

Led him to worship wood and stone

And brought great shame on David’s throne

And when he died the people came

To Rehoboam to reclaim

Some respite from the heavy yoke

But Rehoboam folly spoke

The kingdom split in two that day

The royal line down south held sway

But in the north a new king built

The idol shrines and brought great guilt

On Israel’s throne was no good king

And everyone did their own thing

No respite for the hungry poor

No justice and no rule of law
