On the Death of a Granddaughter

Writer: Neil RogersNeil Rogers

Susie came to stay, then left

Our splintered hearts in shards, bereft

For her few days we give you praise

Though now we can’t perceive your ways

Just on your face we fix our gaze

Susie came to stay, new-born

Our hearts were rent in shreds and torn

A life so short, a dawn so brief

From this poor world of pain and grief

Ripped far to soon by death, the thief

Susie came to stay, sweet child

Our hopes high-piled, our hearts beguiled

What was the rush? Why quick to leave?

What use lament? Why must we grieve?

What comfort can we now conceive?

Susie did not come to stay

She came to teach us how to pray

Your kingdom come, your will be done

Your name be hallowed as we run

Our course to see the battle won

Susie is no longer here

We shall not live rough-shod by fear

For you have conquered death, Oh Lord

For you supply each breath, Oh Lord

And now preserve our faith, Oh Lord
