Elisha and Jonah

Writer: Neil RogersNeil Rogers

Elisha called on God most high

The river stopped and he passed by

Elisha was a man of power

His word alone made monarchs cower

Some naughty boys by bears were killed

The widow’s jar of oil he filled

The crowds he fed, the dead he raised

A leper healed, the Lord be praised

Invading armies were disarmed

Unseeing servant’s fears were calmed

Though these prophets spoke God’s words

God’s people went from bad to worse

Kings north and south forgot the Lord

And Jehu put them to the sword

But Jehu was a violent man

Whose actions went beyond God’s plan

The northern foes at God’s command

Took Israel from the Promised Land

The Northern tribes had lost the plot

Down south a slightly better lot

On David’s throne some good kings sat

Like Asa and Jehoshaphat

And Joash started well but when

His mentor died he turned again

On every high and lofty place

They worshipped idols in disgrace

About this time to Nineveh

Jonah was called to minister

But when at first the message came

He knew this job would cause him pain

So down to Joppa off he went

And caught a boat for Occident

And while he slept there raged a storm

The sailors woke him in his dorm

Get up and pray! Don’t sleep, arise!

And overboard they threw supplies

The storm raged on and they drew straws

But Jonah knew he was the cause

Despatch me to the raging waves

My sacrifice is sure to save

The Lord a giant fish supplied

And Jonah wailed from deep inside

The spewed up prophet took the road

To Nineveh and doom foretold

The people heard and turned to prayer

So God delayed his judgment fair

Then Jonah’s red hot anger flared

He did not want the Lord to spare

On Nineveh he called down fire

The Lord rebuked him for his ire
