Before the world and stars were made
The Lord God sang a song and played
The tune of life and with delight
God sang the words ‘Let there be light!’
And on one boulder spun in space
He formed the mountains in their place
Air filled with birds, the sea with fish
The land with critters was his wish
And from the earth God made a man
His Spirit breathed into Adam
Then from his side a rib he took
And Eve’s fair form made Adam look
‘Bone of my bones, flesh of my flesh!’
In Paradise unclothed and fresh
They played and danced and walked and swam
And that’s how life on earth began
The Lord came in the evening breeze
And with them walked among the trees
He blessed them and his work displayed
He showed them all the things he made
All Eden’s Garden was their home
There was no place they could not roam
‘Avoid one tree!’ the Lord God said
The day you eat its fruit you’re dead
The snake suggested just one bite
Would not cause death, but kindle sight
God knows your eyes will open wide
And right and wrong you can decide
Where are you? Rang the plaintive cry
We’re hiding where the grass is high
Afraid, ashamed behind this bush
We’re naked, can’t you see us blush?
What have you done? You ate the fruit?
Who said you need a fig-leaf suit?
And Adam blamed it all on Eve
She blamed the snake who had deceived
Then God Almighty cursed the snake
And promised Eve her seed would break
The serpent’s head and in the fight
His heel would feel the serpent’s bite
By painful labour Eve would bring
New life to birth through suffering
And Adam’s labour, sweat and toil
With thorns was crowned from cursed soil
Then out the Garden they were sent
Two sons, they had an argument
Men fell to violent disbelief
The heart of God was filled with grief
But Noah was a man who prayed
“Go build a boat!” So he obeyed
And two by two the critters came
Then rose the floods and fell the rain
Then God remembered Noah’s crew
And on the earth His Spirit blew
To separate the land and sea
Then Noah set the critters free
And Noah from his vine brewed wine
And mankind fell a second time
In those days with one tongue they spoke
They built a tower which God broke
They fled and scattered far and wide
The human heart was filled with pride
