And once again the Lord God found
One person whom he blessed and crowned
With promises of land and seed
But Abram had one crying need
He had no child and Sarai’s womb
Lay barren like an empty tomb
Forsake your people, leave your kin
Depart your father’s house, begin
a journey that will take you to
A Promised Land reserved for you
Your children’s number none will count
All nations blessed on your account
And Abraham believed the Lord
Packed up his things, set off abroad
His nephew Lot thought, ‘here’s my chance
I’ll tag along’ and at first glance
This made good sense, but then his team
Turned vicious and his men grew mean
So Abraham let Lot decide
Right or left, you pick your side
And Lot went down and pitched his tent
By Sodom. He would soon lament
Now Abraham and all his crew
Went far and wide, his livestock grew
And Lot from trouble deep he ripped
He told half-truths down in Egypt
But meanwhile Sarai’s childlessness
Was causing her such great distress
God’s promises we can unlock
Go use my maid as breeding stock
In sin once more God’s people fell
The hand-maid’s son was Ishmael
Then God remembered Abraham
And visited, revealed his plan
For Sarah there would be a son
The promise of the Three and One
The Lord had Sodom on his mind
The old man begged him to be kind
And Sarah’s mind with doubt was filled
But with the news her heart was thrilled
And laughter came with Isaac’s birth
But Ishmael watched with mocking mirth
And then God called on Abraham
To sacrifice his precious lamb
The father took the knife and fire
The son bore wood to light the pyre
And Isaac saw his father’s face
Was ashen grey, of joy no trace
Abba, here’s wood, fire and knife
But where’s the lamb to yield its life?
The Lord himself will give his Lamb
But laughter died in Abraham
He seized his precious, promised one
And raised the knife to slay his son
But from the sky an angel roared
Enough! Enough! Put down your sword
For now I know your heart is mine
The promise is through Isaac’s line
To every nation, tribe and tongue
My blessing will unfettered run
And in the bush a hidden ram
Will substitute, dear Abraham!
From every strange predicament
God saved him everywhere he went
He prayed for rulers in distress
He prayed for cities to be blessed
